2023-08-09

The road to further education in China is becoming increasingly crowded, and the cramming exam oriented education has brought a lot of pressure to students. This has led parents to turn their attention to overseas study, which places more emphasis on comprehensive education.

In the study abroad community, higher education in the United States has always represented the highest level in the world, making it the first choice for many parents. Choosing to study in the United States not only provides access to the highest quality education in the world, but also means that children have more choices and opportunities in their future. Before choosing to study in the United States for their children, parents may want to first understand the education system in the United States.

About the Education System in the United States

1 Educational Thought in the United States

The core of American education is to cultivate creativity, independent thinking, self-directed learning, and practical abilities. At the same time, the US government gives universities considerable freedom, and the courses offered by each university have different characteristics that meet the needs of different students, ensuring the multi-level nature of talent cultivation. It also encourages students to improve their cognitive abilities, laying a foundation for their subjective initiative in future employment or scientific research, and enabling them to have more innovative and practical abilities.

2 About Enrollment

Before entering higher education, local students in the United States are required to complete 12 years of primary and secondary education (grades 1-12), and after graduation, apply to enter universities or professional colleges for further studies.

The usual time for autumn enrollment is in August or September; Spring enrollment varies depending on the semester and quarter systems, usually starting in January.

3 About Semester System

The school calendar in the United States usually starts in August or September and lasts until May or June of the following year, with most freshmen typically enrolling in the fall semester. At the beginning of the semester, the school will hold many exciting activities, and many students are also adapting to their new life at this university. If you have similar situations, it will be easier for you to establish good friendships.

More importantly, many professional courses in schools start in the autumn, so many of them teach more basic content, which is more conducive to students gradually adapting to higher intensity rhythms.

Most schools in the United States adopt a two semester system, while some colleges adopt a three semester system, which means there are three semesters in a year. Some universities also divide the academic year into four quarters, including the elective summer semester. If summer semester is excluded, the academic year of American schools usually consists of two or three semesters.

4 Colleges and Universities

There are two main types of higher education institutions in the American education system, namely universities and colleges. These two institutions differ in structure, scope, and educational philosophy.

University

Universities are usually large-scale educational institutions composed of many different colleges and majors. They can include multiple academic units such as liberal arts schools, engineering schools, business schools, law schools, medical schools, etc. Universities typically offer a wider range of course options and professional fields, providing students with more opportunities for learning and research. Universities are also more inclined to conduct high-level scientific research and collaborate with experts and scholars in various fields to carry out innovative projects.

College College

Colleges are relatively small educational institutions, typically consisting of only one or a few academic fields. They typically focus on liberal arts disciplines or a specific professional field, such as art schools, business schools, or music schools. The scale of the college is relatively small, and the teacher-student ratio may be lower, which helps to provide a more intimate and personalized teaching environment. The college also places more emphasis on undergraduate education and provides students with opportunities for practical experience and career preparation.

5 Classification of Higher Education

① State School/college/University

The United States is composed of 50 states, and each state has at least one university or college that provides high-quality higher education to students at a low cost. These universities are funded by their respective state governments and typically equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. For example. University of California or Texas A&M University. Different schools have different selection criteria, and students need to have a certain minimum ratio to enter their university.

② Private university/college

These institutions are privately operated and are considered expensive compared to public schools.

③ Community Colleges

Community colleges offer transferable two-year certificates or associate degrees. Usually, graduates from community colleges transfer to universities or four-year colleges to complete their degrees. They can transfer the credits they earned at the community college. Community colleges offer ESL (English as a Second Language) courses or other programs to prepare students for university courses.

④ Technology Institutes

These are institutions that offer four-year courses related to science and technology.

⑤ Liberal Arts College

Students pursuing a liberal arts degree focus on their chosen "major" subject, but they must also attend "general education" courses in almost all other subjects. Liberal arts colleges typically offer a broad range of study areas, while universities offer the same majors in two or more degree areas. Students can major in mathematics, but they can still choose engineering careers.
