Columbus Day
Coming to the National Day holiday, fellow students studying abroad must have been exposed to the lively atmosphere of domestic holidays online. Don't envy, as you are far away from home, you will also welcome the American public holiday - Columbus Day!
01 Columbus Day
In the United States, the second Monday in October is designated as Columbus Day, also known as Columbia Day, which commemorates the discovery of the new continent of America by Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, colonist and navigator in 1492, and the expansion of Xintiandi and Western civilization. On this day, the whole United States will have a holiday to celebrate this festival.

In addition to the United States, many countries and regions around the world have a tradition of celebrating Columbus' arrival in the Americas, such as Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, as well as Spain and Italy in Europe.
02 The Origin of Columbus Day
The origin of Columbus Day can be traced back to Christopher Columbus' maritime history event in 1492. Columbus was an Italian navigator who first arrived in a new continent, later known as the Americas, on October 12, 1492, while searching for a western route to India for the Spanish royal family.

Columbus' voyage marked Europe's "discovery" of the American continent, and in the following centuries, this event had a profound impact on the history of the world. It opened up an era of European exploration and colonization of America, leading to contact and conflict between European colonizers and Native Americans.

In commemoration of Columbus' maritime achievements, Columbus Day has become a celebratory event. The earliest Columbus Day celebrations can be traced back to the 18th century, when Italian immigrants held parades and celebrations in some cities in the United States to commemorate Columbus. Later, the festival gradually expanded to other cities and states, and became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937, scheduled to be held on the second Monday of October every year.
03 The Meaning of Columbus Day
Encourage exploration and innovation: Columbus Day is a celebration of the spirit of navigation and exploration. Columbus' brave adventure and thirst for the unknown world represent the spirit of humanity in pursuing knowledge, challenging limits, and exploring new territories. This spirit was affirmed and praised on Columbus Day, inspiring people to continue exploring and innovating.

Celebration of Italian culture: Columbus was an Italian, so in some Italian communities, Columbus Day is a time to celebrate and showcase Italian culture, heritage, and contributions. This includes holding parades, concerts, and other celebratory events.

Historical cognition and reflection: Columbus Day also triggered a reassessment and reflection on historical events, especially on European colonialism and unfair treatment of Native Americans. Some people believe that Columbus' arrival led to cultural conflicts, population decline, and loss of land. Therefore, some cities and regions have changed this holiday to "Indian People's Day" or "Indigenous Peoples' Day" to commemorate and emphasize the culture, contributions, and rights of Native Americans.

04 About Columbus

Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer, born in 1451 (the exact date of birth is disputed, generally believed to be between 1451 and 1452), and passed away in 1506. He was a famous figure in the early Atlantic Age, renowned for his discovery of America.
He has had a strong interest in the ocean and navigation since childhood, influenced by ancient Greek and Roman cultures. He believes that the earth is round and firmly believes that Asia can be reached through Western navigation.

With the support of the Catholic monarchs of Spain, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean four times between 1492 and 1502, opening up the route from the Atlantic to the American continent and becoming the first person to discover the New World of America, bringing a new civilization to the Americas. Columbus' adventure also brought new opportunities for the development of America, hence he is also known as the 'Father of America'.
05 Celebration of Columbus Day

Because Columbus was born in Italy, Italian elements will be the theme of the parade. Dressed up as Renaissance era 'Italian nobles', lively drum bands, and decorated with Italian and Columbus elements, floats are the main characters of this grand parade.

During the parade, some Italian immigrants and their descendants from the United States, dressed in magnificent costumes, also participated in the parade. In addition to floats and parade formations, American officials and some well-known figures will also participate in the parade. Interested students can go and watch, the scene is quite grand.

If you don't like to join the crowd, then participate in sailing themed activities on Columbus Day to experience a different cultural atmosphere. You can also use your public holidays to invite three or five friends to getaway and experience the unique charm of nature.
